Napoli failed to secure a Champions League spot for next season with a lacklustre 1-1 draw at home to Hellas Verona.

Gennaro Gattuso’s side knew that a win would secure a top-four spot regardless of other results, but wins for AC Milan and Juventus meant one point was not enough and the Azzuri finish fifth.

Despite playing very poorly, Napoli took the lead through Amir Rrahmani. They were pegged back shortly afterwards though, as Davide Faraoni found himself on the end of a long ball from Koray Gunter.

Verona started the game much more positively than Napoli despite having nothing but pride to play for. Napoli’s first big moment took half an hour to come, as they saw Insigne’s shot curled just wide.

Napoli were turning in one of their worst performances for a long time, but they snatched the lead on the hour mark through former Verona man Rrahmani. The ball fell loose after a corner and the defender was there to smash it home on the half-volley and put his team back into the top four.

Eight minutes later though, Napoli were pegged back. Verona were deserving of a goal, and a long ball over the top caught Elseid Hysaj napping and allowed Faraoni to ghost in and poke the ball in off the post. Suddenly Napoli were back down in fifth place.

This result means it’s Europa League football for Napoli, and a 10th place finish for Verona.
