Former Inter and Italy midfielder Thiago Motta has been appointed the coach of Spezia.

The 38-year-old will replace Vincenzo Italiano, who is now in charge of Fiorentina, and the Brazilian-born Italian has signed a three-year contract with Gli Aquilotti.

“I am really happy to be here and proud of the trust placed in me by the Platek family, by the director Riccardo Pecini and by the whole club,” Motta said on the club’s official website.

“I can’t wait to start this new adventure and to meet the Spezia fans who have always stood out for their passion.

“I want to pass on my ideas to the boys, entertain our fans, and give my best every day to reach the goal we have set ourselves.”

Spezia president Philip Platek welcomed the former Genoa player and tactician to Gli Spezzini.

“We are very happy to welcome Thiago Motta and entrust him with the leadership of our first team,” Platek said on the official club website.

“We evaluated several candidates, but we were impressed by the energy, dedication and seriousness of Thiago Motta, who combines these important values we share with a football philosophy that we hope our fans are proud of.

“We can’t wait to see the new coach of Spezia Calcio at work, convinced more than ever of the validity of our choice. Good work Thiago Motta!”
