On a night in which Napoli paid tribute to Diego Maradona by unveiling a statue of the Partenopei legend, it was fitting that a brace from Dries Mertens during a 4-0 win over Lazio took them clear at the top of Serie A and won him Player of the Week for Round 14.

Had the Neapolitans not retired the number 10 shirt in honour of the Argentine superstar, the Belgian would be among the frontrunners for the famous short, having become the club’s all-time leading scorer last term.

In front of an expectant crowd at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Sunday night, Napoli took an early lead through Piotr Zielinski, but it was Mertens curling finish to end a wonderful team move that crushed the hopes of the Biancocelesti.

Then, on 30 minutes, the Partenopei No. 14 received the ball on the edge of the box and struck a beautiful first-time looping effort over goalkeeper Pepe Reina to make it 3-0 and allow his side to control the second period with relative ease.
