Augustine Eguavoen sent his best wishes to injured Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and hopes he can make a return to the Nigeria national team soon.

The 22-year-old suffered facial injuries and a damaged eye socket in the Partenopei’s 3-2 defeat away to Inter in November, but he could return to action earlier than the three-month prognosis that was predicted.

“First of all, we hope that he is well and can recover as soon as possible,” Eguavoen said on Nigerian radio station Brila FM.

“I am sure that Victor has a great desire to play and help his national team, but above all he must recover his fitness as best as possible, and then we should understand if Napoli will let him go.

“If Osimhen is not with us, we have other good players who can replace him.”

Eguavoen is perhaps best remembered for an incident in the Nigeria v Italy match at the 1994 World Cup, in which Gianfranco Zola was controversially sent-off after the referee had adjudged the Italian forward to have illegally knocked the Nigerian defender over. Italy still won 2-1.
