Lazio Lead Chase For United’s Greenwood

As Italian Serie A football fans will know, it has been a summer of change at English Premier League side Manchester United as they continue their struggle to return to the heady days they enjoyed under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, and plenty of further changes are still anticipated in the coming weeks prior to the transfer window slamming shut.

It seems that Lazio may also be ready to do a deal with them this summer as they help them make a change of their own, and the rumour mill has recently been claiming that le Aquile are not just chasing, but are now actively in talks with the Old Trafford outfit over the future services of attacker Mason Greenwood.

The 22 year old’s recent controversies are well known and have been well reported on, so I’ll ignore them here, but the one capped England international forward got himself back on track with a loan spell to Spanish La Liga side Getafe in the 2023/24 campaign, and whilst his goals to games ratio was not great (eight goals in 33 league appearances), he certainly impressed and showed that he had regained his form.

With the Red Devil’s holding a valuation on him that was a bit too rich for Getafe, he has long been linked with a move away to more major European sides (not least as new United partial Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had already strongly implied that there was still no way back for him), and it seems Lazio could now well be in pole position for his capture.

With Lazio presumably making the first real move for him, it will be interesting to see if any other parties now follow suit and firm up their own intentions, but as reports go the opening discussions are around a £30 million deal, and whilst it would not suit Lazio’s perspective, United would love a bidding war here if they could start one.

The club have long been linked with him though, so plenty will show no surprise that he seems to be back as one of their top targets this summer again, but naturally as per the speculation rumour mill, Lazio rivals Juventus and Napoli are name checked with also having an interest in him, even though those claims really are not backed up.

Equally naturally, teams in Germany, Spain and Portugal are also very tentatively linked with having an interest in him, but having shown an interest in taking in him on loan this time last summer, it does feel like if Lazio have firmed up their permanent interest, Greenwood may appreciate the value they have clearly placed on him.
