Italian Serie A fans are in for a treat as it has now been confirmed that the hugely controversial, and incredibly talented, Mario Balotelli will again return home as he has signed a new contract with Genoa.

34 year old striker Balotelli has got good experience in Italy, France and England and it is safe to say that the 36 capped international striker has left an impression where ever he has moved, and not always for footballing reasons – for example, one of the daftest things that he has been known for was an inability to put a training bib on.

Despite his talent, he has been a football nomad and has regularly moved around clubs and has never really found a place he could call a true home for himself. So it is probably no surprise that he has been without a club since he left Turkish Super Lig side Adana Demirspor last summer.

With a few years left in his professional playing tank, there has been plenty of speculation about where he may end up next, but Italy was always front and centre on the rumour mill, but given his media friendly past it was always about which club may take a risk on the potential future headlines.

Genoa were one of a handful of clubs strongly linked with him, and this week their interest was confirmed as they picked him up as a free transfer, and he agreed to work with manager Alberto Gilardino, who helped sell their own improvement project to him.

What part Balotelli plays in turning their fortunes around remains uncertain, as they are currently in last place in the the table, having only registered one win in nine games. Their season is far from over though with so much football left to play, and so many points to play for, and if they win their game in hand on those above them they could instantly move as high as 13th place.

The self confessed ‘why always me’ may, or may not, be looking to end his career at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris but he will definitely be walking in to the club wanting more headlines, and there would be no better way for him to begin to sign out the twilight of his career by firing them up into mid table or above in the games that remain.

He will need some time to gain full fitness, but with Mourinho departing Roma, journalists will love Balotelli’s return.
