There cannot be many football fans out there who are not keenly aware of Luka Modric’s stellar playing career so far.

Having come through Dinamo Zagreb’s youth ranks and establishing himself in their first team as a key player in midfield, he earned a move to the English Premier League and made well over 100 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur, before then making the move in 2012 to Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid.

The 39 year old, 184 capped Croatian international, is a serial winner and has lifted titles and winners’ medals in Croatia, as well as tasting huge success in Spain with Los Blancos, and he also has a World Cup runners up medal to his name as well as a Ballon d’Or.

With his contract in Madrid coming to an end next summer, it is now being reported that with a desire to play on for at least another 12 months, he has now struck a prospective agreement with Serie A side Como to join them as a free agent at the culmination of the 2024/25 campaign, but that it is dependent on them keeping their top flight status for the tenure of his association with them.

It is believed that Cesc Fabregas has been the driver behind trying to get him to commit to the side and that Modric has been swayed by both life in the Lake Como region, but also the sporting project outlined to him as he edges ever closer to his retirement from the professional game.

His potential move to the club is far from a done deal though, as the Serie A caveat looks large at the club with 15 games played in the campaign so far. Having accrued 12 points from two wins and six draws, they are currently sat in 17th place in the table and are only out of the relegation spots based on a slightly better goal difference when compared to Verona.

They have a huge challenge ahead of them, and as things stand having recently completed their rise into the top flight, it looks like they may have a quick return to the Serie B competition. However, if they can turn their form around and secure the prize of Modric for next season, that could well catapult their growth to a new level – both on and also off the pitch with the media spotlight he would bring with him – and it would also be a boost to the division itself given the players hugely successful past.

Fans of Serie A will no doubt be watching on to see how Como progress for the remainder of the season, as the opportunity to see Modric in action would be a big pull for plenty of football lovers.
