Despite Manchester City still having 115 Premier League charges hanging over their head for breaches of Financial Fair Play rules, the January transfer window has already seen them spend a reported 150 million Euros as manager Pep Guardiola looks to rebuild his first team squad, as it seems they are not done there.
City have had significant struggles in the 2024/25 campaign and it has left the reigning Champions 12 points off the English Premier League top spot and they are at risk of dropping out of the Champions League ahead of the knockout rounds, and as the New Year window comes to a close reports have them linked with two Juventus stars, and a midfield talent at Atalanta.
With Omar Marmoush, Abdou Khusanov and Vitor Reis already confirmed, it is being claimed that Juve’s Italian international Andrea Cambiaso remains a top target for them in the next week and a bit. Some are claiming Juve will have a decision to make by the end of the week with a formal offer expected by Monday, but the 24 year old 13 capped talent is not the only Old Lady player the Etihad outfit are apparently looking at. It is also being said that they are now interested in seeing out of favour Douglas Luiz return to the club, after previously opting against using the buy back option they had on the 26 year old Brazilian midfielder when he was with Aston Villa.
The fly in the ointment on any potential capture of Luiz would appear to be that Guardiola’s side would prefer a loan move for the rest of the campaign, but the Bianconeri are only really interested in a permanent move that would at least allow them to break even on their original investment given the signing has not worked out how anyone would have hoped so far.
Another potential option for City on the defensive midfielder front could be fellow two capped Brazilian international, Ederson. The 25 year old Atalanta regular is also said to be on their target shortlist and that they would also view him as being a potential part of a new guard to replace the ageing Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva over the course of the next few seasons.
Whether or not anything concrete comes of this rumour mill speculation obviously remains to be seen, but we are now well into the business end of the transfer market so if anything is to happen, it will now be sooner rather than later.
