Inter could be set for an all-Italian clash
The draw for the last-16 of the Champions League has thrown up the exciting possibility of a clash between two Serie A teams.
Inter have been placed in portion of a draw which will pitch them against either Juventus, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord or AC Milan.
Juventus have a 2-1 lead over PSV heading into the second leg of their play-off tie and will fancy their chances of making it through to the next round.
Milan will be feeling similarly confident, although they must overturn a 1-0 deficit against Feyenoord at the San Siro if they are to make further progress.
If Juventus and Milan both reach the last-16, Serie A would be guaranteed at least one representative in the quarter-finals of the competition.
One of that pair will face Arsenal if they win their play-off ties. While the Gunners would be tough opponents, injuries to key players are threatening to derail their season.
Atalanta could complete a quartet of Serie A teams in the last-16 of the Champions League if they can recover from a 2-1 deficit against Club Brugge.
A controversial 94th-minute penalty by Gustaf Nilsson scuppered their hopes of returning from Belgium with a draw, but they should have enough class to turn things around at home.
Lille or Aston Villa are Atalanta’s potential opponents in the last-16 and both teams would present a stiff challenge at that stage of the competition.
Things would get much tougher in the quarter-finals, with Liverpool and Barcelona among the teams they could face. Paris Saint-Germain are also in that portion of the draw.
While all four Serie A teams have a chance of making progress, the Nerazzurri appeal as the most likely to go the furthest given how the draw has panned out.
They reached the final in 2022/23 and will be hoping to at least match that feat this time around.
