Transfer windows often see Italian Serie A sides linked with exciting potential talent from the varying European leagues and English divisions and the Scottish Premiership are usually no different, and there has been some very interesting deals struck in recent times that has seen quite a few well known names arrive at some of our bigger clubs.
With former Manchester United Academy graduate Scott McTominay the latest to be helping himself to a number of domestic headlines given his performances for Napoli this season, if reports are to be believed highly rated Celtic right back Alistair Johnston may well be the next international talent to move to the division.
The 26 year old, 51 capped Canadian international moved to Parkhead back in the 2023 January transfer window from CF Montreal and having recently signed a contract extension, he is set to remain at Celtic Park until the summer of 2029. He also recently racked up his 100th starting appearance milestone for them, but reports in Italy are now claiming that Inter Milan are very confident of securing his services come the summer.
With Inter having been previously interested in former player Matt O’Riley, before ultimately losing out to Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion, it is said that they have kept tabbed on his progress since and are now ready to make their move for him.
Brendan Rodgers and Celtic are highly unlikely to be willing to do a deal here unless I Nerazzuri come in with a wonderful offer, and although he is seen as very reliable and well liked by Rodgers for his consistency, he does not seem to be a natural fit for Inter’s sort of transfer busy here.
But plenty have made the adjustment to life in Italy and have thrived upon making the change, and he certainly has the sort of background that would imply he could settle very quickly and ultimately go from strength to strength should he ever arrive on our shores.
If Inter are interested they will not want to lose out again, but in some ways the bigger question is actually, with Inter already having secured 28 year old Dutch international Denzel Dumfries down to an extended contract, even if the are on the hunt for very experienced back up to him, would Johnston want to run the risk of moving countries and all that upheaval to then potentially get stuck as a back up option only given the bedding in period he would need on the language alone?
