Fans in the wider world of football are delighted that the real domestic game is back following on from all of the World Cup shenanigans and distractions, and as we edge towards the beginning of September, the curtain is soon to come down on the summer transfer window for the 2026/27 campaign.
With a new month almost with us, the Italian Serie A continues to look likely to make some more high profile moves before Deadline Day hits, and one of the biggest could involve Fiorentina who are reportedly already in talks with Manchester United over the possibility of Joshua Zirkzee making a return to the country. For those fans who use Japanese football bookmakers for their flutters on Serie A football, the odds on this deal going through before the deadline will be interesting.
Following the 25 year old’s two year spell with Bologna, he left for the bright Premier League lights of Old Trafford back in the summer of 2024, but it has not been a great spell for the six capped Netherlands international attacker as even though paid a reported £36.5 million fee for him, he has only gone on to make 27 starting appearances for the side, with almost 50 more showings from the substitutes bench.
With him yet to feature this season for manager Michael Carrick, he has long been a regular on the speculation rumour mill but one of the main claims was of a Premier League stay, potentially with Aston Villa. It seems that Fiorentina’s alleged interest in him is largely new and a welcome additional to the claims even at this late stage of the day.
With him being available, if a deal does go through with La Viola it is being suggested that it will initially be a loan spell for the remainder of the current season, and that there will either be an optional clause to purchase built in, or as the Red Devil’s would prefer and is now common place these days, an obligated buy clause after a set number of appearances had been reached.
The player himself still has three years left on his originally agreed deal at the club, so he is said to be very open to a move back to Serie A to basically kick start his own career again with far more regular action, and with him clearly not in United or Carrick’s plans moving forward – whilst they would prefer a permanent deal before the window shuts, they would more than accept a 12 month delay if it was guaranteed to go through and turn to permanent at the end of this season.
It is not believed that the talks have reached an advantage stage just yet between the parties, but it very much feels like that if this one is going to happen before this window closes, then significant progress can be expected to be made over the weekend, leaving Monday free for the formalities, paperwork and signatures.
