The Inter Milan badge is one of the most recognisable symbols in Italian football, but the crest seen today is very different from some of the designs worn by the Nerazzurri throughout their history. With the new Serie A season underway, there are plenty of new betting sites coming soon to keep an eye out for any avid football punter.
The First Inter Milan Badge
The original Inter crest was designed by Giorgio Muggiani, one of the club’s founding members, on March 9, 1908. It featured the letters FCIM layered over a gold background and surrounded by two concentric black and blue circles.
The colours were intended to represent the sky and night, while the gold reflected the stars. Muggiani’s design was influenced by English club badges and established many of the visual elements that would remain associated with Inter for generations.
The Inter Milan badge has regularly repeated the original design with smaller changes throughout the years.
Inter Milan Old Badge Designs
The crest underwent several major changes during the 20th century. Following the club’s forced name change to Ambrosiana in 1928, the badge was altered substantially, while subsequent versions introduced features including stripes, footballs and different shapes.
One of the most distinctive periods came between 1979 and 1988, when the badge became a shield featuring Nerazzurri stripes and a prominent serpent. The Inter Milan old badge from this era is particularly recognisable because of the Biscione, the snake associated with both Inter and the city of Milan.
The classic Muggiani-inspired design returned again in 1989, before being modernised through several further iterations during the 1990s and 2000s.
What Does The Inter Milan New Badge Mean?
Inter unveiled the latest iteration of the club crest in March 2021, ahead of its introduction for the 2021/22 season. Rather than completely abandoning its history, the club sought to simplify the traditional design for a more modern and digital audience.
The biggest change was the removal of the F and C from the central monogram, leaving the I and M to represent Internazionale Milano. The letters remain enclosed by the familiar concentric circles, creating a design that maintains a clear connection with Muggiani’s original crest.
The colours were also made brighter, with a more vibrant blue designed to improve visibility across digital platforms. The redesign was created by Munich-based design studio Bureau Borsche.
Why Are There Stars On The Inter Milan Badge?
The Inter Milan stars on the badge have traditionally represented the club’s Serie A titles. Inter’s first star appeared alongside a redesigned crest in 1979, symbolising the achievement of winning 10 Italian championships.
A second gold star was added above Inter Milan’s badge in 2024 after they won their historic 20th Serie A title.
From Muggiani’s original FCIM monogram to the minimalist IM design introduced in 2021, the Inter Milan crest has changed considerably while retaining its most important characteristics: black and blue colours, concentric circles and a strong connection to the club’s Milanese identity.
