Lazio’s European ambitions were dealt a huge blow as they were held at the Stadio Olimpico by lowly Carpi in Serie A on Wednesday afternoon.

Chances were at a premium for both sides throughout as the result heaps yet more pressure on the shoulders of Lazio coach Stefano Pioli.

The hosts controlled the lion’s share of possession during the opening exchanges but it was the visitors who fashioned the most threatening chance through Antonio Di Gaudio.

Felipe Anderson flashed an effort across goal on 17 minutes as the Aquile cranked up the pressure and Lazio probed but could not navigate their way past a stringent Carpi backline until Alessandro Matri sprung through on 39 minutes. Simone Romagnoli, however, was on hand to mop up the danger.

Pioli withdrew Felipe Anderson at the interval for Keita Balde as the hosts went in search of an opener. Antonio Candreva tried his luck from distance six minutes after the restart but his effort flew over.

Cristian Zaccardo could have edged the away side infront when he pilfered possession from Abdoulay Konko inside a dangerous area but shot straight at Etrit Berisha. Konko’s audacious attempt ten minutes from time troubled the Carpi goal as Pioli summoned Filip Djordevic from the substitutes bench.

The final chances came as Miroslav Klose headed over from a Candreva cross on 86 minutes and Biancorossi man Kevin Lasagna spun Konko inside the penalty area in injury time and drew a fine stop from Berisha.

That would prove to be the last action of the game as the home side departed to a chorus of jeers.

Despite their disappointment, the Biancocelesti rise to ninth in Serie A while Carpi edge closer to safety but stay 19th.
