Name: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

Location: Via Piccolomimi, Milan.

Built: 1926

Capacity: 80, 074

Originally known and more commonly referred to as the San Siro for the name of the district in Milan in which it is situated, the Giuseppe Meazza was given its name as a homage to the Italy striker Meazza, who played for Inter, and briefly for Milan throughout the 1930’s and 40’s.

The stadium was specifically designed for football, with the stands and tiered structure created with the sport in mind.

The inauguration took place in 1926, in which 35,000 spectators saw AC Milan lose 6-3 to Rivals Inter.

The stadium was originally AC Milan’s home ground, but Inter became tenants in 1947, and the two have shared the ground ever since.

The stadium went under renovation in 1990 for the World Cup that year, which included an extra stand being put on the famous ground.

The ground has played host to the 1965, 1970 and 2001 Champions League finals, as well as key games in the 1990 world cup, including the Opening Ceremony and the Semi Final.

The Gentleman Ultra says…

It is not often that in world football, one city can boast two giants of the European game, Milan certainly can. Inter and Milan are two titanic teams not only in Serie A but in the history of football. The fact that these giants share a city perhaps leads to their being no surprise that they share a stadium.

It is also no surprise that the Giuseppe Meazza or San Siro is also one of football’s most iconic footballing structures. It also is the stage for one of footballs biggest and most passionate derbies the Derby della Madonnina.

When Inter take on Milan this stadium comes alive with a mix of flags, flares fireworks and huge banners. These are a result of the hard work of the many Ultra groups from each side such as Inter’s Boys San and Milan’s Brigate Rossonere.

This colossal stadium has been instantly recognisable since its World Cup refurbishment in 1990. This saw an extra tier added supported by no fewer than eleven spiral towers, whilst a roof with huge red iron girders was also added adding to its unique design.

This stadium has become a Mecca for football fans as one of the must visit stadiums in Europe. Quite simply its atmosphere and vantage points are second to none.
