Are Pescara destined for Serie B?

It is hard to see any way for Pescara to stop the rot and avoid making a swift return to the division of which they were champions last year under Zdenek Zeman.

While they are currently not occupying the relegation places, they are only two points from safety and unlike others around them are showing no signs of recovery.

While Siena do look doomed to Serie B, the other sides in the drop zone, Palermo and Genoa, both picked up important draws on the road at the weekend to show that they may be capable of turning things around.

As well as that, those clubs include players like Marco Borriello, Andreas Granqvist, Fabricio Miccoli and Andrea Dossena who could all prove vital in the run-in.

These are players who can change a game at either end of the field in both the Rossoblu and Rosanero squads respectively but when you take a look at Pescara, who do they have at their disposal who can realistically help them halt a three game losing streak?

The only name that stands out for the Delfini is Mattia Perin, a 20-year-old goalkeeper who, without him in their side, they would likely already be occupying the relegation places.

He has turned in some truly outstanding performances this season that have already saw him watched by AC Milan and Napoli with his display in Florence to help his side to a 2-0 victory over Fiorentina undoubtedly going to be remembered as one of the most inspired displays by a goalkeeper this year.

Fast forward just three weeks though and, with little or no cover from a Delfini defence that was all over the place, he was forced to pick the ball out of the back of the net six times against Sampdoria on a shambolic afternoon for Cristiano Bergodi’s side.

This completely inept manner of defending mean it is hard to look past them as being certainties for relegation.

They have conceded more goals than anyone else in the league this season with 45 and at the other end, have also scored less goals than any other team having managed just 17 strikes in 22 games so far.

Hardly the kind of form that will help you to beat the dreaded drop.

Juan Quintero and Vladimir Weiss have been revelations but is is a sad state of affairs to see a team who tore defences asunder last season, scoring goals at will, whose top scorer now (along with Mervan Celik) is a Slovakian midfielder who is not always assured of a start with just three goals.

Experienced players like Manuele Blasi, Elvis Abbruscato and Christian Terlizzi have simply not delivered consistently enough what was expected of them and were it not for the aforementioned youthful trio of Perin, Quintero and Weiss in the side, you shudder to think what the Biancazzurri’s fate would have been.

They do not have a favourable run of fixtures ahead either with Bologna and Lazio games bookending two crucial clashes against fellow strugglers Cagliari and Palermo that should ultimately decide the fate of their season.

This season was never going to be an easy one as many predicted after losing their coach (and with him their attacking edge and style of play) as well as both their top scorers Lorenzo Insigne and Ciro Immobile and midfield maestro Marco Veratti to Paris Saint Germain.

Pescara are far from being the worst side to have graced Serie A as some suggested they might be before a ball was kicked, you need only look back at the abysmal Cesena side last year who collected just 22 points or the Ancona team who performed so lifelessly in 2003/04 would be up there with the candidates for that, and have done very well to keep their heads above danger up until now after overcoming so much adversity.

With a tough run to come though, they look like their form is taking a serious slump at a time they can ill afford it and could allow those behind them to overtake them and leave them facing a return to the Cadetti next year.

One response to “Are Pescara destined for Serie B?”

  1. I’m glad you mentioned the departures Pescara have had. This Pescara squad is a far cry from the one that won promotion a season ago.

If you take the manager and the 3 best players off of almost any team, how can you expect anything other than a struggle. The Delfini were shown the cash for those players and they took it. With the state of the game these days you can’t blame them for doing so.

Are they going down, most likely. Do they have a chance to stay up, yes. Under the current circumstances, for those who have waited years for Pescara to be in the top flite, they’ll take it.
