Lega Pro 2013/14: Week Four Review – More Twists and Turns

It is fortunate that there were so many twists and turns in Grione B this week as inexplicably Grione A did not have any fixtures. This leaves all the focus on an exciting week that saw Pisa fail to take three points whilst Pontendera march on at the top of the division. At the bottom it was more misery for Miccoli’s Lecce whilst Nocerina continue on their quest to concede as many goals as possible.

The action started at Nocerina on Friday night as they took on Frosinone in what was arguably the game of the week in the division. The match started at a furious pace with Frosinone taking the game to the home side. This paid off when after only two minutes Salvatore Aurelio got on the end of a weighted pass and chipped the ball delectably over the keeper.

Slovenian Kris Jogan then pulled one back for the home side against the run of play when he scored with a fantastic lob that stunned everyone in Frosinone yellow. Nocerina could have added to this but could not convert a penalty and this then invited the away side to continue what they had started as goals from Andrea Gessa and former Palermo man Davis Curiale sealed their fate. Frosinone are up to fourth whilst Nocerina slip to 14th.

Gubbio and Grosseto had to be called off due to torrential rain. This looked like it would have been a good match and it is perhaps ironic that a match played in perfect conditions was so poor. Pisa went away to Catanzaro and in the bright sunshine played out a terrible 0-0 draw. This saw them move up to second although they missed the chance to really make a statement.

An inconsistent Salernitana managed to beat a fairly terrible Barletta. Salernitana look like they will hover in mid-table whilst Barletta are in free fall. It is true they have only conceded six goals but they still have not managed to find the net this season, a statistic that paints a very bleak picture.

Viareggio on the other hand decided this weekend that they love conceding as they allowed L’Aquila to ship four past them. Ex Torino forward Claudio De Sousa netted two as the home side even had their keeper sent off to help out, the game ended 4-1 and was an enthralling contest.

Prato moved up to fifth after beating Paganese 0-1 away at the Stadio Marcello Torre, Alessandro Malomo beat former Roma keeper Tomas Švedkauskas. Lecce remain rooted to the foot of the table as they continue to implode. Still with no points of the board they travelled to Perugia in a nostalgic fixture that once graced Serie A. How times have changed, the fixture this time saw a goal from Gianluca Nicco and a penalty from Umberto Eusepi, heap more woes on a Lecce side that featured no Miccoli.

Finally the league leaders Pontedera breezed past Benevento 3-1 to continue their winning ways. An exceptional performance from Luigi Grassi saw the home side send out another signal to the rest of the division that they are the team to beat.

Cracking feature – great to read about some of the former Serie A teams knocking around the lower leagues.
