Totti – Roma

Cesare Prandelli confirmed that Francesco Totti would make the 22-man Italy squad for the World Cup if he was selecting the squad now.

The Roma captain, 37, has been in excellent form so far this season and despite not playing for the national team since the 2006 World Cup Prandelli claims he would call him up to the squad for the World Cup on current form.

“Players with great talent like Francesco, like Parma’s Antonio Cassano, are always under observation,” Prandelli told the press.

“We’ll evaluate Totti a month before the World Cup. But a Totti like this is a player to talk about, to reflect upon, it is a fantastic Totti.

“If the World Cup was today then I would absolutely call him up, there is no doubt about that.”

Despite Totti’s three goals and six assists in the opening seven matches Prandelli claims there has not been contact between the two and that Totti’s condition immediately prior to the World Cup would count the most, “I haven’t spoken to him about it, there is no need eight months before the event.”

“The priority is to get to the World Cup with 22 players who are in good shape. The athletic condition of players will be decisive,” he concluded.

Totti deserves a place in Italy’s squad. He has 37-year old experience and a lot of skill under his belt.
