Former AC Milan striker Marco van Basten believes that Wednesday night’s match between the Rossoneri and Ajax can go in either direction due to the differing form of the two clubs.

The 49-year-old, who became FIFA World Player of the Year in 1992, joined Milan in 1987 from Ajax and went on to a trophy laden career with the Rossoneri until an injury forced him to quit football in 1995.

“I have played for both clubs and they both have my sympathy so in the end I hope the best team will win the game,” van Basten told Dutch television channel NOS.

“Is Ajax capable of winning against Milan? I don’t know, it would be nice if this young squad can manage to secure a win but on the other hand the finesse and experience of the Milan players can give them advantage like we saw against PSV earlier this season.

“Milan is missing the something. They are currently in a mid-table position in the league and for a club with the stature of Milan that’s not enough. That’s what makes them vulnerable at the moment.

“It will be an interesting game that can go in both directions.”

  1. Author it’s nice to remind us of that Totti’s penalty goal vs the Netherlands in Euro 2000.
