Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta believes that the mentality of the club has changed.

The recently retired centre-back highlighted financial cutbacks as a critical factor in explaining the change in the Rossoneri’s fortunes.

“In the last years of my Milan career the team had changed much, both in terms of people and mostly mentality. I honestly did not feel comfortable anymore and when one feels that way, a change is right,” the 37-year-old told Thehardtackle.com.

“I think at this moment Milan cannot spend as much money as they have done before, thus if you cannot spend you can’t be part of Europe’s elite. It is as easy as that.”

The former Lazio and Montreal Impact centre-back also shared his opinion of Milan full-back Mattia De Sciglio and how he thinks defending has changed.

“I played with De Sciglio during my last year in Milan and I believe he’s a wonderful full-back: he’s one of the few who never gets passed in one-on-one situations. I think he can still grow and follow in the footsteps of traditional great Italian defenders,” Nesta continued.

“I think in this age they prefer to teach defenders how to play the ball rather than to be a true defender. On one hand this is good but on the other you mustn’t forget to teach something as basic as how to mark a man.”

Quit talking about how they don’t teach how to mark a man and get on the coaching staff to help this abysmal back line that we fans have suffered through since the likes of you, Silva, Zambrotta, and Maldini have since left!!!! Save us professor!
