Former Juventus player Lilian Thuram has blamed the lack of competition in Serie A for Juventus’ failures in the UEFA Champions League.
Juventus have dominated Serie A in recent years, topping the league and on their way to securing a fourth consecutive Scudetto. However, a quarter-final participation aside, the Bianconeri have overall struggled in Europe.
“They win in Serie A, but have difficulties in the Champions League where there are great teams to beat,” said Thuram on Radio Anch’io Sport.
“In Europe it is difficult for Juventus who do not get enough of a preparation in Serie A.
“That is the difference between Serie A and the Spanish or English leagues.
“I hope Juventus can start doing well in Europe, but in Serie A they remain unrivaled and that is penalizing.”
Juventus have qualified out of their group for the Champions League Round of 16, and will face Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on February 24.
Once Roma and Milan get their new stadium they will challenge Juve.
