Kohler+Hitzfield Borussia DortmundEx-Juventus centre back Jurgen Kohler believes that Gianluigi Buffon could be the key to Borussia Dortmund knocking Juventus out of the Champions League on Wednesday.

The former Germany international played for the Bianconeri between 1991 and 1995 but also became a symbol for the Dortmund side, having featured 191 times for the Bundesliga outfit after having left Turin to return to his homeland.

“I’m certain Borussia can qualify,” he told Bild. “Juventus might be the strongest side in Italy but they also have weaknesses.

“Buffon is no longer the keeper he once was and lately he has been prone to mistakes, just like the rest of the Juve defence.

“The scoreline is very tricky for them, especially as Dortmund are extremely dangerous going forward. I reckon Dortmund will win the tie 3-1.”

Kohler picked up 105 international caps throughout his career and going on to win the 1990 World Cup with his country.

This is why Juve must secure Neto this summer.

He’s right. Juve’s defense is indeed prone to mistakes.

Gone are the days where Italian defenses were as impenetrable as they were elegant.

Once upon a time (c. 1960s to early 2000s) there was a succession of great Italian defenders. It seems to have hit a wall.

Chiellini has his strengths but he’s no Cannavaro or Baresi and players like Ranocchia once thought to be the future can barely lead Inter who are a mess on defense.

BUT. Juve’s midfield is as strong as any in Europe (or the world) so he may want to rethink his over confidence.

It will be difficult for Juve to qualify. They need to get that one away goal and with the way Morata is playing it’s possible.
