The Rossoblu will finish above the Blucerchiati in Serie A standings for the eighth time in 35 attempts this season, but have been refused a UEFA licence for European competition next season.
“It gives me great satisfaction to get back to the European places with this team,” the 57-year-old tactician told Gazzetta TV’s Senza Appello talkshow.
“This is a different side to the one of 2006, that was a well-oiled team and with champions like Diego Milito and Thiago Motta.
“It happened a little more by chance as the team was born and built over the course of the season, but this gives me even more satisfaction.
“Europa League? It would hurt a little to see Sampdoria take our place.
“It would be nice to play in it, because there a several clubs that have snubbed the competition in the past.
“I hope that our third appeal will have a different outcome, but it will not be easy.”
