AC Milan are facing competition for Zenit Saint Petersburg’s Axel Witsel, as Paris Saint-Germain join the race for the Belgian midfielder.

The Rossoneri were thought to be nearing a deal for the 26-year-old, after confirming the start of negotiations and the player’s agent rubbishing reports of a proposed move to Juventus.

Zenit would have now pulled the handbrake on further negotiations, according to TuttoMercatoWeb. Despite Witsel reportedly voicing his approval to an AC Milan switch, the late arrival of PSG would have Zenit thinking twice about too quickly relinquishing the Belgian.

The Italian media report that the Rossoneri would have a four-year deal on the table for Witsel, but will now have to jostle for the Zenit ace’s signature.

Witsel joined Zenit back in 2012 from Benfica for €40 million, making 28 league appearances and scoring four goals for the Russian club last season. He also helped his club reach the quarter finals of the Europa League.
