A late Cyril Thereau goal gave the four-time Scudetto champions a rocky start to the defence of their league title.

Unsurprisingly, it was the Serie A champions that troubled first. A defensive mix-up allowed Kingsley Coman to dash into the box unhindered, but his slack shot didn’t trouble Orestis Karneziz.

Roberto Pereyra squandered the next opportunity against his former club, when he tried to guide the ball past Karneziz but to no avail.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side continued the second half in very much the same vein, but still struggled to unlock the Udinese defence. Mandzukic came close again with a back-post header, but against Karnezis beat it away.

Bruno Fernandes came to the rescue next when Mandzukic tried to pick out Pereyra in the box, but the Portuguese youngster sent the ball skyward to safety.

Simone Padoin looked to have finally broken the deadlock for Juventus, but against Karnezis got down quickly to deny the league champions.

Stefano Colantuono screamed at his players to remain compact and continue to frustrate the opposition.

Pogba came very close once again to crushing the Udinese resistance, but took one too many touches and Thomas Heurtaux slid in to deny him.

With ten minutes to go it was the moment Juventus’ fans had been dreading.

Panagiotis Kone picked out Cyril Thereau perfectly in the box, who shocked Gianluigi Buffon with a neat finish at the back post, silencing the Juventus Stadium.

The Bianconeri threw players forward in a last ditch attempt to stifle the opposition, but Colantuono and his men held on for a priceless three points.
