The former Lazio captain’s contract expired at the end of the season but has signed a new one deal with the club although Pioli confirmed Luca Biglia will remain as the new captain.
“I am very happy about the return of Mauri,” Pioli told reporters at his pre match press conference ahead of the game against Bologna.
“He can be a reference point for us and has great experience at the club.
“He has trained, he is motivated and he could play at the weekend.
“Biglia is still my captain and Klose is vice-captain, nothing changes even thought Mauri has returned.
“The boys have been training well and are in good condition ahead of the new season.”
Pioli went onto talk about Alberto Gilardino, who played under him when he was coach of Bologna, with rumours of his possible move to Lazio mounting.
“It was a pleasure to coach him and he is a true professional.”
