Stefano Pioli LazioFormer Lazio midfielder Nello Governato claims coach Stefano Pioli gives his former club an added edge to their game.

The Biancocelesti defeated Udinese 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday and Governato sees no reason why the club cannot finish in a European place despite the substantial summer spending of their competitors.

“I enjoyed the Lazio performance yesterday, it was a difficult game against strong opposition on a pitch that was almost unplayable due to rain,” Governato told Elleradio on Monday.

“It’s too easy to consider [Alessandro] Matri as the best player, just because he scored twice, as [Wesley] Hoedt really impressed me.

“However, the added value of the team is Pioli who will again guide Lazio to a place in the top five.”

Lazio now turn their attention to the beginning of their Europa League campaign as they travel to Ukraine to face Dnipro, however Governato isn’t convinced the competition should be the Biancocelesti’s top priority.

“Lazio have a big enough squad to deal with the competition, but surely the commitment will be hard as injuries are a great unknown,” said the former sporting director.

“We saw yesterday with the return of [Federico] Marchetti how important it is to have your top players available, personally I would prioritise the league campaign but if the squad is kept together then I’d go out confidently in Europe.”

Lazio sit eighth in Serie A after taking six points from their first three league matches.
