Carlo TavecchioFollowing Italian national team coach Antonio Conte’s decision to resign following the summer’s Euro 2016 in France, FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio thanked his friend for his work, and said his decision was understandable.

Conte’s two year contract as Italy’s manager expires this year after the European Championship, and despite Tavecchio’s previously efforts to convince Conte to sign a contract renewal, the former Juventus manager has resisted, and now seems set to test himself at the helm of Chelsea.

“Antonio told me that he will end his experience as Italy’s coach following the European Championships,” Tavecchio told Sky Sport Italia.

“We will always be grateful for his commitment and sacrifice.

“He feels the lure of the pitch and misses the everyday training as a club coach.

“Of course this is understandable. He is a man of action, it is not about the money; it is a question of having consistent work.

“He told me that every morning he wakes up and he misses the field, because as the national team coach, there is no work to do on the pitch.”

When asked if any specific names were being circulated as Conte’s replacement, Tavecchio simply replied that FIGC would take the matter seriously to find the most suitable replacement.

“We will take all the necessary steps, because this is not about me, or Conte, or the other names circulating, this is about the national team,” he concluded.
