Former Inter legend Lothar Matthaus has come out to harshly criticise Inter coach Roberto Mancini’s handling of the Xherdan Shaqiri situation.

The club has been pushing the Swiss out the door since the opening of the summer transfer window.

With the 23-year-old turning down a move to Stoke City and twice being left out of Inter’s last two friendlies, against Stuttgarter Kickers and Carpi, a messy divorce looks to be on the cards.

Matthaus has bemoaned and condemned the club’s actions, specifically pointing fingers at the Nerazzurri coach.

“If you do not have the trust from the coach, then a player cannot prove anything,” Matthaus said to Swiss newspaper Blick.

“Mancini has never had confidence in Shaqiri and has never helped him to adapt. If you buy a player [like Shaqiri] then you have to play him!

“With his [Shaqiri] qualities, he should never be out of the starting lineup.

“Frankly, I still don’t understand the attitude of Mancini; the coach wanted him but then doesn’t play him.

“If I were Inter’s investor, I would be asking for an explanation from my coach.

“What is happening at Inter is shameful and it is why they risk not winning anything for a long time.”

Shaqiri made 15 Serie A appearances for Inter last season, only managing one goal and two assists.
